80 degree mornings are now the standard here in early June. The water was clear with a black tint and was cooling to the touch.
8 paddlers launched around 9 thirty and we felt a big temp drop while transitioning from the sunny landing into the shaded canopy. Ahh, Cocodrie.
The paddle pace that this group established in these conditions was a moderate 1.2 miles per hour, aka barge speed. We hugged the bank shade in open the areas where the 5 mph winds were only present. It appeared that a small fishing tournament was in place and friendly fishermen hellos were exchanged. We were also presented a couple opportunities to sharpen our wave handling skills.
Thanks to the Roberts' and Vidrine clans for scoping and sharing their previous and recent paddle experiences here. They were the catalyst for this shaded paddle.
The Bayou Cocodrie gauge was at 5.64 at time of paddle. Giant salvinia is present and fills all of the backwaters and currently not a paddle issue.
Johnson's Landing is near the hamlet of Clearwater in Evangeline parish which was established in 1890 per the water tower. The $5 dollar launch fee is paid in a small pole box near the road curve in front of a non descript camp, 1/8 mi. or so up from the landing. Also there was some soft and not drivable sand area near the landing.
The old bayou channel trek, with 100% shaded cathedral tops was the most memorable of this great 8/10 paddle.

Clark's landing
This was the original launch point for this trip. Very pleased with the launch change to Johnson's Landing. Changed icon above to ruins as the rest room facilities here are now defunct and inoperable.
