From home in Reis Magos we walked over to Atalaya, a local volcanic outcrop. Then we sought local trails up through the terraced fields to Assomada. Passing the church and electrical substation,we followed the Veranda dos Moinhos to the old water Mill and the tank at the end of the Levada do Canico. We followed the levada along the steep side of the Porto Nova valley through a short tunnel to the head of a valley where stream cascaded down from Camacha. A steep rough trail climbed beside the stream. A stone arch bridge carried us and the levada across the stream. We went a little more and turned back at gondola wires providing access from the top to the bottom of the valley. We watched one load of workers and farm products be carried up the steep slope. We then returned using a familiar route from Mea Deus church in Assomada and then down our steep street Caminho Velho de Reis Magos.
